EXCITING NEW MEDICAL PROCEDURE PROVIDED MY SUCCESSFUL KIDNEY TRANSPLANT!!

EXCITING NEW MEDICAL PROCEDURE PROVIDED MY SUCCESSFUL KIDNEY TRANSPLANT!
Current mood: chipper
Category: Blogging
After 14 years with my first kidney transplant, it began to fail. I became sicker and sicker as the toxins and poisons accumulated in my bloodstream. Nausea, anorexia, and severe fatigue encompassed my world. I was placed on the kidney transplant waiting list and was told there was a five-year waiting time. Life seemed hopeless. Then, three days after being placed on the list, I received a phone call that a cadaver kidney had come in, that was a perfect match for me! I had to travel 150 miles to the University of Michigan to receive the transplant. When I got there, they immediately prepped me for surgery. I was so excited! Just as they were about to take me into surgery, the doctor came in and informed me that it had been decided to give the kidney to some one else who also needed another organ with it. I was devastated. I went back into my sick, depressed hopeless world and tried to hang on for my family’s sake.
My husband wanted to donate his kidney to me, but he was not a match. My son, daughter, and son-in law all wanted to donate, but I could never risk their lives or jeopardize them in any way because I love them so much. Therefore, I refused their help.
Then, my husband learned of a new program at the University of Michigan, called the Kidney Donor Pairing Exchange program.
More than 83,000 people in America are waiting for a kidney transplant; sadly, about 12 of these patients die every day because there aren’t enough donors. Many kidney patients have someone who is willing to donate, but because of immune system or blood type incompatibilities, they are not able to give a kidney to their loved one. Kidney paired donation matches one incompatible donor/recipient pair to another pair in the same situation, so that the donor of the first pair gives to the recipient of the second, and vice versa. In other words, the two pairs swap kidneys.
My husband signed us up, determined that somehow he was going to save my life. After a month in the program, we were matched up with another couple. We underwent months of testing to make sure that everything would go well with the surgeries. A week before the upcoming surgeries I had a final cross match with my anonymous donor. It came back positive, which meant that I would reject the kidney, so the surgery was cancelled. Again, I was devastated, as was my husband and family. I was informed that suddenly my antibody level had gone up, so in all probability, they would never find a kidney that I wouldn’t reject. I had made up my mind that I was going to die, and set about putting my affairs in order.
Then the U of M called with the news that they had a new doctor on the staff that had much experience with high antibody levels. She felt that she could desensitize me enough, so that my body would accept the kidney. They started me on very strong immunosuppressant medications. Then I underwent intravenous treatments with IVIG, a powerful antibody blocker. I was monitored closely for the severe side effects that go along with this treatment. I also underwent plasmophoresis. This is where they remove all the plasma from your blood stream and replace it with albumin. It is done somewhat like dialysis, and is extremely exhausting and weakening. I continued on for my family.
At last, it was deemed that the surgery could take place. Fortunately, for us, the other couple we had matched with were still waiting to participate with us. My husband was a perfect match for his to be recipient.
Once again, we were the recipients of bad news. My husbands left kidney had something on it, that they thought was a cyst, but could be cancer! The plan was to take him into surgery first and biopsy the sight, before the other surgeries went ahead. With much fear and trepidation because of the unknown, we arrived for our surgeries.
My husband went in first at 7:00am. The surgery was only supposed to take 2 hours, but the doctor did not come out till after 3 hours. I knew something was wrong. The doctor explained that they went in laparoscopic ally, and had difficulty removing the right kidney because the liver was in the way. A major artery was nicked in the removal, bleeding ensued, so they opened him up to repair the damage. The good news was that the kidney only had a cyst on it, so the surgeries could go ahead. I went back into recovery to see my husband. They were transfusing him, and he was in a lot of pain. When he saw me he was horrified, thinking that his kidney was cancerous, and that I was not getting my kidney. It took a while to convince him that I was still waiting for my surgery.
Finally, at 5:00pm that day I was take in for my kidney transplant. The surgery took 4 hours. I was in recovery for 5hours. My new kidney started to produce urine immediately. My creatinine, which is a level of the toxins in my blood, came down a little the first day. The second day, a little more, but not enough, so they decided to do a biopsy through my fresh incision. I was told that my new kidney was still asleep but there was no rejection. I had so many people praying for me. Then suddenly, my kidney woke up and my creatinine dropped to almost unheard of levels ! This was undoubtedly a miracle in my book!
Now I am slowly healing from my surgery and dealing with the side effects of all the new medications. My doctor told me to go out and enjoy life now! It was easy to say, but hard to do. Having been sick for so long, it is hard to break out from the psychology of the “sick syndrome”. Nonetheless, I will continue to persevere forward and try to spread my story to let others know the miracle, blessing, and awesomeness that result from organ donation! It truly is the “Gift of Life”!

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER THREE OF “A PRESCRIPTION FOR LOVE”
“EMOTIONS EXPLODE”
His touch seemed charged with electricity and Nicole felt warm excitement course through her veins. Yet her control was now gone and her hand reached up to slap him. Travis caught her tiny wrist in his large sculpted hand, just before it reached his cheek. Never had he felt himself so out of control with his emotions. Deep desire over took his logical thinking. He groaned as he cupped Nicole’s high set cheekbones between his hands and possessively covered her soft yielding lips with his.
Nicole, taken by surprise, was unable to escape his assault upon her senses. His mouth smothered her lips, and a strange light-headedness possessed her body as waves of explicit pleasure rocked over her. His kiss was unnerving her, weakening her while uncovering a sweet longing she had denied even to her self. Her body began to tremble as her lips hungrily responded to his. Nicole’s slender arms reached up and encircled Travis’s neck, as if they had a will of their own. Her body moved closer to Travis, her soft curves melting into his strong solid muscles.

TANTALIZING EXCERPTS FROM, “A PRESCRIPTION FOR LOVE”

TANTALIZING EXCERPTS FROM, “A PRESCRIPTION FOR LOVE”
Nicole was apprehensive, sensing that his presence was near. Her anxiety
heightened as she turned from the ship’s railing and saw a tall figure coming towards her
through the fog. She recognized his confident stride and powerful well-muscled body. As he approached, panic rose in Nicole, causing her knees to almost buckle beneath her. Travis’s strong grasp clasped her bare shoulders forcefully, pulling her close to him. Nicole struggled against him, trying to push away her desire to melt into his arms and give way to the rising passion she felt whenever he was near.
Nicole looked into Travis’s piercing blue eyes and gasped upon seeing the flames of passion and desire reflected in them. With a moan, Travis’s mouth came down possessively upon her soft yielding lips. Nicole felt her defensive walls crumble as pulsating sensations whirled in her body, igniting an all consuming desire that only he could satiate. She sighed and molded her body into his, letting go of her self control.
Travis caught her to him, holding her against his virile body and kissed her, plundering her lips until she had no will of her own. It was as if someone had lit a fire at every point they touched. Somehow her fingers were buried in his hair, feeling its crisp unruliness with the last of her reeling senses and somehow her full lips were opening under his. Her lips were smothered by his mouth and a strange lightheadedness possessed her body as waves of explicit pleasure rocked over her. The fever reached her mind and nothing mattered except her hunger for the man that held her in his arms. She became limp with desire reveling in this primitive fierceness.
Travis swiftly pulled Nicole up against his body, knowing what he desired right at that moment, unable to control the passionate side of the love he felt for her.
Her laughing ceased as she felt the muscular contours of his body interlock against the bare surfaces of her body. She gasped as she gazed into his expressive eyes
and encountered the deep passionate chemistry that flowed between them. Her arms possessed with a will of their own, slid up around his neck, enabling her to press her body even closer to his, delighting in the sensations the act was arousing within her.
With a groan, Travis brought his lips down upon her soft pink yielding mouth. An electrical charge surged through him, igniting his body to boundaries he had never approached before. His lips endlessly explored hers, tasting a sweetness, that he wanted to drown in forever.
Nicole pushed aside her fears, letting go of all her built up defenses, unable to deny that which her heart and body craved so deeply. Her head whirled as a warm tingling sensation spread to the most vulnerable areas of her body, urging her to melt her body into his, desiring to become as one with him.
His hand wandered to the bare satiny softness of her back, caressing ever so gently, causing shivers to travel up and down her spine. His kiss became more demanding, and hungry as he took in the response he body was giving him.

MY INTERVIEW FOR MY BOOK, “A PRESCRIPTION FOR LOVE” FROM ALL THESE BOOKS
Posted by lmstephenson on July 12, 2008
BIOGRAPHY OF LEEANNE MARIE STEPHENSON
RN and Author of
“A PRESCRIPTION FOR LOVE”
My introduction into the world of medical professionals started at the age of six. I was diagnosed with “brittle diabetes”, and spent the majority of my childhood in the hospital. Doctors, nurses, and nutritionists impressed me with their patience, sensitivity and positive can do attitudes. They taught me how to balance my food intake and insulin injections so I could lead a “somewhat” normal life. The professionalism these people displayed made me realize that I wanted to be part of this care giving community. Therefore, I became a Registered Nurse. After graduating with honors from Mercy Central School of Nursing, (Grand Rapids, MI), I secured a position as a Registered Nurse at Blodgett Hospital, (Grand Rapids, MI). Over the next ten years, I married my high school sweetheart and started a family. Periodically I changed jobs to meet the demands of parenthood and family life.
Then my life took a dramatic turn as I was diagnosed with kidney failure due to my diabetes. The prognosis was less than promising. As my physical condition deteriorated, I was forced to give up my career as a nurse. Fatigue and weakness encompassed my entire world as I underwent dialysis treatments. Once again, I was on the receiving end of medical care. Desperate and determined to still be part of this wonderful profession, I started writing a romance novel based on the experiences I had encountered as a nurse. When the days that lie ahead of me seemed impossible to face, I did not allow my tears to compromise my strength. Instead of giving up, during the darkest time in my life, I drew on the love that surrounded me from my wonderful husband and family to write this loving story. When I wrote, I was released from my physical problems and taken back into the world of nursing, which I loved so much. Romantic stories can always release us from the problems of real life. They send us into a fantasy world where our imaginations can soar. I strove to take my readers and myself into that world. Thus was born my book, “A PRESCRIPTION FOR LOVE”.
This book is so very special because it represents the strong love I had surrounding me, and what I could accomplish because of it, during the lowest point in my life.
The one driving force in my life was to be there for my family, especially my precious children. I had to continue and be a strong role model for them. I demonstrated to them that when adversity is overwhelming, you still have to endure. Getting ahead in a difficult situation requires an avid faith in oneself. I did just that by reaching deep inside myself and drawing on my core values of perseverance and unfaltering resolve to overcome the obstacles in my life and achieve one of my dreams!
After a year on dialysis, I was told I could have a kidney transplant. My wonderful brother stepped forward and gave me the gift of life. From that moment on, my whole world changed for the better and I eagerly embraced this second chance at life. When I felt well enough, I set about getting my romance story published, so I could be an inspirational example of what can be accomplished when life seems overwhelmingly hopeless! Unfortunately, I recently learned that my transplanted kidney is deteriorating. I hope and pray that I am able to showcase my story to others before my health gets too bad.
